Международно училище

As a father of a student at AAS for 3 three years, who at his own will is no longer there, I owe this review to the public.AAS is not accredited by the Bulgarian ministry of education, which may matter to locals. Academically it falls behind other good schools even at the staggering tuition fee of $28,000 per year – the highest in the country. The name “Anglo-American” might be deceiving as the student body consists of the UN with English native speakers being a minority. AAS started during the Cold War for a reason - to provide social, language and cultural shelter to children of the US and British Embassies. Recently, they opened it to the public. There are no entry exams, so the academic levels and command of English of the students are all over the map. Mediocracy is embraced, while academic excellence seems to be frowned upon. If your child is smart and ambitious, this may not be the place for him/her! Just ask for a list of the colleges AAS’s graduates moved onto. It is hardly impressive! The teachers are of mixed quality, yet the majority seem knowledgeable, vibrant, well-travelled and friendly. The best part of AAS is that most teachers are English native speakers, so your child is likely to learn to speak English ad a native English speaker. There is a good balance between male and felame teachers, which is also rare and a plus. The principle oddly paints a picture of “happiness”, and has a policy of “don’t ask don’t tell” on important matters including safety. On campus there are thousands of loose cobblestones, which kids often throw at each other during breaks. My son was hit on the head a few times and complained, first to the teacher, then to me. I spoke with the principal, but nothing was done. Zero! The excuse was: “We cannot keep track of each child while they play”. Seriously?I sensed some anti-Bulgarian sentiment and supremacy on campus, which, while not consistent, rubbed me the wrong way. Folk dancing and local holidays are there and considered exotic, but Bulgarian culture is not embraced. Bulgarian 2nd graders have only 3 classes a week in “native language” which, even in the eyes of their teacher, is a stepping stone to illiteracy. Very poor management. Bad food choice. Especially during holiday seasons the food served to the children is beyond disgusting. The only two great things are - good location and great teachers.

Това частно училище е в много добро състояние. Не уча тук но съм на състезание.

Every day my children are looking forward to coming to school and kindergarten . They very much enjoy their time in school and learning new things each and every day. They participate in a variety of activities and events and enjoy both their teachers and classmates company. They are having a great time and lots of fun too!

Love coming back here! It just makes me feel so calm and happy!
